I was out pruning one of the apples on the east hill today (more on that another time), and noticed some freshly dug dirt at the entrance to the groundhog burrow. In November, I'd found the remains of a groundhog on the terrace. So I'm curious - was that a different one than the one I'd previously seen in this burrow? Is this a different one taking up residence? When I see it, I doubt I'll be able to tell if it's the same one or a different one. I've previously thought about getting a decent camera for taking better pictures, perhaps if I do I'll be able to see some distinctive markings?
Update, March 23: I saw it this morning after dumping the compost and checking out the fruit trees. I think it had been watching me, because I didn't spot it until I happened to look in its direction and it ran (behind the compost bins, to the burrow). I then saw it sticking its head out of the tunnel on the other side of the hill just like before; no idea if it's a different one.
