I saw six crows in the back from the bedroom window today. I was watching two eating seeds/cracked corn I'd thrown on top of the snow on the terrace, then one that had been sitting high up in a tree took off. One of the two on the ground then went with it, then another from a tree, then another, and then finally the other one on the ground. I've seen four together before, but not six.
I enjoy seeing them around, but I doubt the hawks do. I remember spotting some crows and a hawk high up in the tulip poplar and the cherry tree not long ago. I grabbed my binoculars to try to get a better look at the hawk. While I watched it, one crow that was sitting on a branch several feet away repeatedly cawed directly at it. The hawk was looking forward the whole time, occasionally preening, and I imagine it was thinking, in hawk language, "such a motherfucker".
