Fox

About 6:30 this morning I came downstairs, and went to the living room to look out the back windows to see what might be going on. I thought I saw a small movement up by the vegetable garden, so grabbed the binoculars sitting on the shelf and peered out. At first I wasn't sure what I was looking at, if anything, because there wasn't any movement and I was still focusing. Was it just the wood chips around the garlic bed? No, I shouldn't be able to see them from here. Then a head and ear. Dog? Why is the neighbor's dog up there? More focusing and movement and why hello there fox.

This one seemed to be slightly on the younger side - perhaps two or three years old? I'm not an expert on foxes, but it wasn't a kit and didn't appear to be as old as others I've seen. It walked down the path I take to get to the vegetable garden, then hopped up on the big stump, smelled around, looked interested in something in the big hole at the center of it. After a few more sniffs it turned away from it, looking towards the street. It paused for a few moments. I wished I had a good camera so that I could capture it in profile there. I would have had to have been pretty quick, though, because soon it stepped off and went through the grass toward the south hill. It turned in toward the gazebo and walked down along side it and into the front yard. I was somewhat surprised that it chose to walk through the wood chips I'd recently spread there. It stopped again and smelled around, then sauntered across the road, and picked up a little speed as it went through one side of the neighbor's fence and then through another, disappearing from sight.
